The Manatee often referred to as a "Sea Cow" looks a lot like a Walrus with a thick wrinkled gray-brown skin on which there is often a growth of algae. It is a large aquatic relative of the elephant and was often mistaken for mermaids. They have front flippers which help them to steer or sometimes crawl through shallow water. Their powerful flat tails help propel them through the water at speeds of 3 to 5 miles per hour. Even though their eyes are small and they lack outer ears, manatees are thought to see and hear quite well.

The Manatees length is 10 -12 feet and they weigh between 1,500 to 1,800 pounds. Their lifespan is 50 - 60 years in the wild. They eat over a 100 pounds of marine and freshwater plants daily.
