The roots of the Saint Bernard come from the Roman "Molossian" dog. It is said that the Molossian comes from the Tibetan Mastiff

The monks in Switzerland used the Saint Bernard as guard dogs at the monastery. The Saint Bernard was also used by the monks to rescue people that were trapped in the cold Alpine Wilderness.

Saint Bernard's are also said to have a keen sense to predict bad weather like snowstorms and avalanches, which the monks found very useful.
